Print-on-Demand
Print-on-demand is a manufacturing model where each product is printed only after a customer orders it, avoiding pre-printed inventory.
Print-on-demand (POD) is a fulfillment model where no inventory is printed until a customer places an order. Each order triggers a production run of exactly one item, which is then shipped directly to the buyer.
For wall art, POD is the dominant model. It enables infinite design variety (because nothing has to be pre-printed), reduces waste (no overstock), and makes one-of-a-kind or customized orders economically viable.
The tradeoff is per-unit cost: POD is more expensive per print than bulk-offset production because every print is an individual run. The economics work because the markup absorbs that cost and customers are willing to pay for customization.
