Picture Rail

A picture rail is a horizontal molding mounted near the top of a wall that supports hanging art via hooks and wire, avoiding nail holes in the wall.

Picture rails are horizontal wooden moldings installed 10–18 inches below the ceiling, originally used in Victorian-era homes when plaster walls couldn't easily accept nails. Pictures hang from S-shaped hooks that clip onto the rail, suspended by wire.

The system allows easy repositioning without damaging walls — a significant advantage for renters or anyone who rearranges frequently. It also gives a distinctive visual look: the visible hooks and wires become part of the decor.

Modern reproductions of picture-rail systems are available for homes that don't have them historically. They're particularly popular in converted lofts, gallery-style spaces, and any room where flexibility matters more than wall cleanliness.
